My name is Izabela Kowalska-Wieczorek, I’m 62 years old, I’m a female from Poland. I live in Poland, in the beautiful Toruń on the Vistula.
From year 1975 to 1980 I studied at the Faculty of Painting, Graphics and Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw. In 1980 I defended a diploma in Graphic Design.
I am an illustrator of children’s books and a cartoonist.
What is your journey up until this point?
I was born in an artistic family. My parents were graphic designers. Since I remember, I always wanted to be an illustrator of books. As a small child, I “corrected” pictures in all children’s books. I used to draw a lot in primary and secondary school. After graduating from the Academy, I painted pictures, made graphics and textile sculptures and illustrated poetry. After winning the competition for children’s illustration I became a professional illustrator and started a long adventure with the book. I illustrated about 40 books and many multi-tabloid calendars for children. In 2013 I decided to test my capabilities in another area of art. I choose satirical drawing. In this way, I discovered my new passion. Now I’m a retired illustrator and an active cartoonist.
What is your inspiration? Where do you go for inspiration?
When I was painting, my imagination was the inspiration. When I illustrated, I was inspired by fairy tales and poetry.
As a cartoonist I am inspired by the topics of competitions, which are usually very general, but often related to the problems that the modern world is facing (environmental degradation, wars and their effects, etc.)
Who is your biggest support?
I could always count on my loved ones. Since I became a cartoonist and use Facebook, among many new friends I met many outstanding and very helpful people who support me not only in the virtual world.
However, my great daughter Alicja and my dear mother, whom I could always count on, support me the most.
Have you won any awards or appreciation for you work?
In my life I have won many prizes. First in school competitions, than at the Academy – for posters, then after education- for illustrations, thanks to which I got many job offers and became a professional illustrator .
Over the last 6 years, I have won 36 awards and honorable mentions for satirical drawings in international cartoon contests.
What do you like about your work?
I love my job. Thanks to it, I can create my own world. I used to do it in children’s books, and their applause brought me a lot of satisfaction. As a cartoonist, I have the chance to show my cartoons on a wider forum and compare my visions with the ideas of art people around the world. It’s fascinating and immersive.
What do you find the most challenging?
For the freelancer, the most important is self-control, self-discipline and a lot of self-denial. It can be a challenge for someone who does not like his work enough.
What do you want to say to your fans?
If there are any, I would like to say: thank you for being! Your existence is an additional incentive for work.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you for the opportunity to present myself on your website.
